Introduction

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle, Heath Cottage puts you at the heart of the countryside, with plenty of local footpaths and bridleways to explore across acres of fields and farm land. Despite the feeling of being away from it all, the cottage is on the outskirts of the village of Mattishall, and you’re within easy reach of some of Norfolk’s most historic towns, including Dereham and Wymondham. The county town of Norwich is also just a 20-minute drive away.

Inside this semi-detached cottage, you’ll find plenty of room for you to all relax and enjoy your time away. There’s a living room with a wood-burning stove to keep you cosy in the cooler months, along with a separate snug and a sitting area in the kitchen too. Three of the bedrooms have zip and link beds that can be converted to twin beds should you wish.

Despite being thoroughly and tastefully renovated, the property has retained many of its period charms, including its wooden beams. The delightful, enclosed garden is accessible from bifold doors in the kitchen. On a sunny day there’s nothing better than to open the doors fully and enjoy life al fresco, surrounded by the birdsong.

Attractions and nearby amenities

• Norwich offers the visitor so much to see and do. Explore medieval history in the beautiful Romanesque cathedral and cloisters. Visit the Museum of Norwich to learn about the history of the textile trade. Or enjoy some live entertainment at the Theatre Royal or Norwich Playhouse. There’s a thriving arts scene in the city, and lots of high street shops and restaurants to enjoy.
• If you’re a fan of the arts, make sure to check out what’s on at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. This art gallery and museum is situated on the campus of the University of East Anglia, to the west of Norwich town centre.
• The attractive market town of Wymondham has an iconic market cross in the centre of town, and is home to the 900-year-old Abbey. Visit on a Friday morning to experience the busy local market. There’s also a farmer’s market on the third Saturday of every month.
• More or less smack dab in the middle of Norfolk is Dereham, a small and pretty market town. Archaeologists have found signs of civilisation dating back to the Bronze Age here. As well as local markets that are held on Tuesdays, the town boasts a bijoux cinema.
• The market town of Hingham has an unusual claim to fame. An ancestor of Abraham Lincoln was born and bred here, and nowadays you can enjoy his legacy at Lincoln’s tea shop and bistro!
• North of Aylsham, you’ll find the Blickling Estate with its hall and gardens. The hall is a magnificent Jacobean building, and there are lots of tours and events for the little ones to enjoy. The walled garden is beautiful, and you can walk or cycle through the 4,600 acres of the estate.
• From the Jacobean to the Georgian, Holkham Hall is a beautiful manor house built in the Palladian style. Situated in the rolling landscape next to the coastline, Holkham is host to all sorts of events and activities. Check the calendar to see what’s on.
