Rain does not have to spoil a hot tub break, but it changes what matters. The accommodation needs to work as a comfortable base, the journey may need more planning and the outdoor setup still has to be safe to use.
This checklist helps you choose and prepare for a wet-weather weekend without relying on a list of supposedly perfect regions or properties.
Choose accommodation that works when plans change
Look beyond the hot tub photographs. If you spend more time at the property than expected, the indoor space, heating, kitchen and seating will matter.
Before booking, check:
- whether the living space is suitable for everyone travelling;
- what cooking equipment and food storage are provided;
- whether Wi-Fi or mobile signal matters to your group;
- whether there is a covered entrance or somewhere for wet footwear;
- how far you need to travel for food or other essentials.
A property does not need a long list of indoor activities. It does need to remain comfortable if an outdoor plan is cancelled.
Inspect the route between the lodge and hot tub
A short outdoor route can become slippery or uncomfortable in persistent rain. Use the listing photographs to check the surface, steps, lighting and distance from the accommodation.
If the route is unclear, ask the booking provider. Do not assume that decking is non-slip or that a canopy shown in one photograph covers the hot tub.
Check the operator’s weather rules
The accommodation operator should provide instructions for the hot tub. Follow those instructions and any temporary advice given during your stay.
Ordinary rain and a thunderstorm are not the same thing. The Met Office advises people to seek safe enclosed shelter when they hear thunder and to avoid water during lightning. Leave the hot tub and go indoors if thunder or lightning develops.
Do not use the hot tub if the operator has closed it, if the area appears unsafe or if electrical equipment, covers or surrounding surfaces appear damaged.
Plan the journey as well as the stay
Check the forecast and weather warnings before leaving, especially when the property is reached by rural or low-lying roads.
The Met Office advises against driving through floodwater. If a road is flooded, turn around and find another route. Allow extra travel time and contact the accommodation provider if weather could affect check-in.
Pack for the few minutes outside
The most useful wet-weather items are practical:
- dry footwear with suitable grip;
- a warm layer or robe for leaving the tub;
- a waterproof bag for wet swimwear;
- a torch if the provider confirms the route is poorly lit;
- spare clothes for outdoor plans;
- food for the first evening if shops are some distance away.
Check what towels, robes and kitchen basics the provider supplies before packing. These details vary between properties.
Keep a simple indoor alternative
A flexible plan is more useful than a packed itinerary. Choose one nearby indoor option and check its opening times directly. Keep something simple at the accommodation as well, such as a film, game, book or meal you want to cook.
If weather warnings become serious, follow official advice and the accommodation operator’s instructions rather than trying to preserve the original schedule.
